Obama campaign on N.C.: 'We can win it'

The Obama campaign believes North Carolina is still in play and is increasing its television ad spending in the state, but would not say Monday whether President Barack Obama would make an appearance here before the election.

"We continue to believe on the ground we can win it," campaign manager Jim Messina said of North Carolina on a conference call with reporters Monday morning.

Messina and senior strategist David Axelrod said Obama was leading in every battleground state and said they were impressed with early voting results, including in North Carolina.

"I am ridiculously proud of what the North Carolina staff has put on the ground with our volunteers," Messina said.

He also addressed reports from Mitt Romney's campaign earlier this month saying the Republicans were pulling people out of North Carolina, feeling confident in victory.

"I'm calling their bluff," Messina said.

Most battleground state trackers still show North Carolina leaning Republican. The New York Times' FiveThirtyEight blog gives Romney an 82.5 percent chance of winning the state.

"We really believe that North Carolina is within our reach," Axelrod said on the call. "Everything that we see points to a real possibility there."

When asked about whether Obama would make a North Carolina stop in the next eight days, Messina said the campaign has been re-assessing the scheduling after Hurricane Sandy changed plans.

"We're looking very closely at where we're sending him," Messina said, citing recent N.C. visits from Vice President Joe Biden and First Lady Michelle Obama in the state.

I'm sure with thevote early and vote often strategy!

The demographics make it really hard for North Carolina to go Romney's direction. The major population cities are Charlotte, Raleigh, and Greensboro. All Liberal and Democratic. Also they have a large portion of minorities and Mitt Romney isn't getting 20% of their votes. So if tied. That's not good for Romney.

Two polls I've seen recently have NC in a tie (48-48 & 45-45) Turnout will be key. The financial collapse Obama inherited unfortunately has held the general economy back, and winding down the long wars we've been mired has been handled well.... overall well done.

Keep up the pandering, no matter what Observer, Obama is depending on you to help, and you do not want to lose face with your endorsement of him.

Oh I have a staged event that supports my candidate and want you to cover it under the guise of reporting those who are undecided.

It involves handing out a bill to each Trick Or Treater, that shows how much debt the have owing even though they are only a few years old, and saying boooooooo.

Let me know, I want pictures and a full story, just like the Preacher story of Obama's My God or what ever it was, all of mine will be just as spontaneous of course.

I am sure your writer and the Photographer just wandered around Charlotte and happened to come upon that event at that church that day.

And I want them to wander to my house on Halloween at say 6:30, so I will be ready for the spontaneous coverage.

No surprise here. If Romney is counting on North Carolina, he will get a shocker. Just like in 2008, accept maybe by a larger margin, President Obama wins North Carolina again!

I thought Romney was moving resources because NC was in the bag? I'm glad we are a battleground that neither side can "count on". That means they both have to spend money here and woo us. President Obama won NC by 14,000 votes in NC in 2008 and it may be closer this time. People that believe the Romney Ryan ticket gives a hang about them crack me up. Those two would not know how to relate to the working class if I let them punch in and work a shift of my job. The president can also still WIN the election without NC. Romney is winning the states that have more cows than people, and the former Jim Crow states. The president is winning everything else. I can't wait until this is over. I think Mccrory will probably win the governorship, Linda Coleman liutenant governor and no telling what else will happen. A split state is best on every counts. South Carolina is straight up red and look at them. Dead last or tied with Mississippi at 49th in everything.
