Michelle Obama's statement

I am thrilled to make sure you are the first to hear some very exciting news. Charlotte, North Carolina will host the 46th Democratic National Convention in 2012.

Charlotte is a city marked by its southern charm, warm hospitality, and an "up by the bootstraps" mentality that has propelled the city forward as one of the fastest-growing in the South. Vibrant, diverse, and full of opportunity, the Queen City is home to innovative, hardworking folks with big hearts and open minds. And of course, great barbecue.

Barack and I spent a lot of time in North Carolina during the campaign -- from the Atlantic Coast to the Research Triangle to the Smoky Mountains and everywhere in between. Barack enjoyed Asheville so much when he spent several days preparing for the second Presidential debate that our family vacationed there in 2009.

And my very first trip outside of Washington as First Lady was to Fort Bragg, where I started my effort to do all we can to help our heroic military families.

All the contending cities were places that Barack and I have grown to know and love, so it was a hard choice. But we are thrilled to be bringing the convention to Charlotte.

We hope many of you can join us in Charlotte the week of September 3rd, 2012. But if you can't, we intend to bring the spirit of the convention -- as well as actual, related events to your community and even your own backyard.

More than anything else, we want this to be a grassroots convention for the people. We will finance this convention differently than it's been done in the past, and we will make sure everyone feels closely tied in to what is happening in Charlotte. This will be a different convention, for a different time.

To help us make sure this is a grassroots convention -- The People's Convention -- we need to hear from you. We want to know what you'd like to see at next year's convention, how and where you plan on watching it -- and the very best way we can engage your friends and neighbors.

Brad, please share your input with us right now -- how can we make The People's Convention belong to you and your community?

I can't believe it has been more than two years since my brother Craig introduced me at the 2008 Convention in Denver. It truly feels like it was yesterday.

As I looked out at a sea of thousands of supporters that night, I spoke about my husband -- the man whom this country would go on to elect as the 44th President of the United States. I spoke about his fundamental belief -- a conviction at the very core of his life's work -- that each of us has something to contribute to the spirit of our nation.

That's also the belief at the core of The People's Convention. That the table we sit at together ought to be big enough for everyone. That the thread that binds us -- a belief in the promise of this country -- is strong enough to sustain us through good times and bad.

Barack talked at the State of the Union of his vision for how America can win the future. That must be the focus now, and I know so many of you will help talk about our plans with your neighbors -- that through innovation, education, reform, and responsibility we can make sure America realizes this vision.

But, conventions take time to plan, so please help us make sure that your thoughts and your ideas will ring all the way to Charlotte. Get started now:

Looking forward to sharing this together,

Michelle

I'm sure the NAACP is VERY upset about this, since they want Charlotte to be the subject of national boycotts!

Isnt she still a radical member of the I Hate America Club?
Does she not realize the DNC will be exiting the White House after the 2012 election?

Hello President Sarah Palin or

Hello President Donald Trump

Goodbye Barack Hussein Obama.

While Charlotte will benefit the DNC will be a catastrophic loser. Comrade Obama will never get the white vote like in 08. Nevermore. He shot his wad. No Bush to kick around either.
The Republican Party firmly owns NC and its Raleigh capital and the nation and has 2012 wrapped up.

Great Bar-B-Que? Where?

Great BBQ? Hard working?? This is a city that is around only because of big banks. You want hard working, should've gone to Cleveland. You want BBQ, go to St. Louis. NC isn't going to vote Dem again, this is a huge mistake by the DNC.

Leaving NC said...

This will be a catastrophe. We had the street riots, Police helicopters with faulty cameras, closed libraries, closing schools, housing market crash, job market crash, crashed budget, Oh and that little thing about the Mexican Drug Cartel making Charlotte it's main hub for their heroine...Nice, Fitting!!! Is it any wonder I have all ready refused to go to Charlotte, and have put my home up for sale to get away from the self-destructive nature in Charlotte??? They can't handle the thugs and the gangsters....I know they can't handle all the liberal loons!!

I can't believe these mean postings for this very wonderful opportunity for showcasing our great state and our Queen City (and I don't even live in Charlotte!). I am excited that the convention will be held in Charlotte! We have so much to offer the delegates and others who will be here - not to mention the economic impact it will have on the city and throughout the state. I am a strong Obama supporter and believe that he will be re-elected. Yea!!
And great barbeque is found in many places in Charlotte and throughout the state. And to those who are making these negative comments - keep them to yourself!! They are not appropriate and only show your own mean spirit.

I am an ardent conservative and don't agree with the current administration on almost anything. However, I'm glad we won the convention. Maybe, hopefully, we will finally be rid of people calling us Charlottesville, SC after this convention.

St. Louis BBQ? It's OK, but nothing compared to Lexington and Eastern NC BBQ. Best Eastern NC style west of I-95 is at Bubba's. And it's only 45 minutes up I-85N to about a gazzillion great BBQ in Lexington.

No hard-working people because the city was built on big banks? I'd like for you to visit any B of A or Wells Fargo building and tell anyone in the cube farms that if you are part of a big bank, you don't work hard. You will get many objections.

This convention will also be a great way to promote our growing energy sector, especially considering the President's call for 80% of energy to come from clean sources by 2035.

You know now is the time that we should all be working together as GOD'S children. His son is coming back soon and very soon. If this kind of negativity keeps up then this only show ignorance in American people. Times are bad yes we can see that. But look at what President Obama walked into when he took on the role as the President. This mess did not happen over night and it cant be fixed over night. Instead of triing to find fault in him. We need to PRAY more that things will get better. It is sad to say that looks like America wants to go backward instead of forward. This is the reason America is starting to drag behind other countries in education and other things that really need to be worked on. I heard a preacher say once THERE ARE 12 MONTHS IN A YEAR. 6 FOR YOU TO MIND YOUR OWN BUSINESS AND 6 FOR YOU TO LEAVE MINE ALONE. Before you start throwing stones, look at yourself and the skeltons that are in your closets.

Why do so many mean spirited people post on these Observer blogs? It's very scary. I hope it's just some teenagers acting stupid and posting ignorant racist rants. I hope and pray that's true. Are you guys for real?

This is great news for Charlotte ! Those things Michelle Obama is saying about Charlotte are so true: vibrant, diverse, with big hearts and open minds. True Charlotteans welcome everyone to our great city to participate in the democratic process that's made this country great for nearly 250 years. And the BBQ is awesome, too. This'll be a mighty tasty convention !
